Punjab govt to pay 70 per cent of the sugarcane SAP hike

Chandigarh: The Punjab government will bear 70% of the total hike of Rs 50 per quintal in the State Advisory Price (SAP) of sugarcane and the remaining will be paid by the sugar mills.

The state government has increased SAP by Rs 50 per quintal from Rs 310 to Rs 360 for the current crushing season. The cane crushing season is likely to start from November 15. And now, private sugar mills would pay Rs 325 per quintal.

The decision in this regard was taken in a meeting held by Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi with the sugar industry representatives and deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal.

After the government increased SAP, the millers were not ready to bear the burden of increased SAP and delaying crushing season. Channi also asked the mills to be ready for early start of cane crushing.
