Punjab: Sugarcane farmers await pending payment ahead of new crushing season

Chandigarh: As the new sugarcane crushing season is likely to start from November 15 in Punjab, the farmers are still awaiting pending cane dues worth Rs 53 crore from the private sugar mills including Rs 43 crore from the 2019-20 crushing season, reported The Times of India.

As per the media report, Punjab cane commissioner Dr Gurvinder Singh said, “We are pursuing the process of recovery under the Revenue Recovery Act and the Kapurthala deputy commissioner has also attached properties of the directors of Phagwara sugar mill for recovering the amount.”

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh had recently said that the sugar mills in the state including private and cooperative mills will start cane crushing operations from November 15 for the 2021-22 season.
