Punjab: Sugarcane farmers to protest on August 20 for pending cane arrears

Jalandhar: Sugarcane farmers have decided to launch a protest on August 20 as the sugar mills have not yet cleared their pending dues.

According to a news report published in indianexpress.com, the farmers will block rail and road traffic as part of their protest.

The farmers will launch agitation under the leadership of Bharti Kisan Union (BKU) Doaba and Doaba Kisan Sangharsh Committee. The leaders of these organisations convened a press conference and stated that they will launch agitation and block rail routes and national highway.

The sugar mills including private and cooperative owe arrears worth Rs 200 crore from the last crushing season. The private mills owe Rs 145 crore and cooperative mills Rs 55 crore, they said.

The leaders stated that the sugar mills in Haryana are paying Rs 48 higher price per quintal for cane compared with the rate in Punjab which is Rs 310 per quintal and they demanded that the government should increase the cane price.
