Relief for Uganda: Kenya to buy surplus sugar

Uganda President Museveni has stated that Kenya is ready to import surplus sugar produced in the country. He said that his counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta has agreed to import the surplus sugar.

The country has an annual surplus sugar of 220,000 tonnes, said the National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential candidate.

According to the media report, President said, “I thank Kenya for accepting our request to buy sugar which is surplus in our country. Uganda is the only country in East Africa that has surplus sugar. Our production is 600,000 tonnes and we consume 380,000 tonnes of sugar. 220,000 tonnes of sugar is surplus.”

It is not clear how much sugar Kenya will buy and the president is also in talks with Tanzanian President John Magufuli to buy sugar from Uganda.
