Request for “One Time Grant” for India’s sugar industry

Former minister and BJP leader Harshvardhan Patil has a written a letter to former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and made him aware with the current grim situation of sugar industry in India due to Covid-19. He asked Fadnavis to look into it personally and take up the matter with Finance and concerned ministry.

The sugar mills are facing financial scarcity as the sugar sale has gone down due to lockdown imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus pandemic.

In a letter, he said, “The Covid-19 pandemic has drastically hit the sugar sector as it’s outburst in March 2020 happened when the cane crushing was at a peak. The immediate impact of covid-19 is seen in skyrocketing of cane arrears to Rs. 20,000 crore. Adding to it the piling of workers salaries, labourers wages, outstanding dues of supplier’s of consumables who are ironically from the MSME sector.”

“With the view to lift this farmer oriented rural sector in one shot, it is extremely necessary to give a “One Time Grant” of Rs 650 per tonne on average cane crushed in the last two seasons (3012 lakh metric tonnes is the average cane crushing for SY 2017-18 and 2018-19).” he further added.
