Rift in political party over sugarcane dues

Chandigarh: Controversy over sugarcane arrears in Punjab is refusing to die down. Punjab Minister Brahm Mohindra asked the Congress MP Partap Singh Bajwa to raise issues of sugarcane cultivators with Chief Minister and not in media. The issue surfaced after the Bajwa wrote a letter to CM Amarinder Singh over unpaid sugarcane dues, and letter media covered the story.

Taking up the issue, Minister Brahm Mohindra said, “Bajwa had full right to raise issues of public interest, but there is always a “proper way” to do things. Don’t rush to the media with your letters written to the CM, unless the issue of public interest raised by you in them are the last thing in your mind and your intention is something else.

“You don’t rush to the press with your letters addressed to the CM as it defeats the real purpose or may be your purpose is actually something else.” he further added.

Bajwa had written a letter to CM mentioning that the government has not taken steps to clear pending cane arrears of around 70,000 sugarcane cultivators, which is Rs 681.48 crore.
