Season 2023-24: Sugar production in Karnataka reaches around 17 lakh tonnes

The sugarcane crushing season in Karnataka has gained momentum, with 73 sugar mills commencing crushing operations. The state has experienced a decline in both sugar production and the average sugar recovery rate compared to the previous season.

According to data from the ISMA, as of December 15, 2023, 73 sugar mills in Karnataka are in operation, and collectively produced 16.95 lakh tonnes of sugar. In contrast, during the same period in the previous season, an equivalent number of sugar mills were operational, contributing to a higher production of 19.20 lakh tonnes of sugar.

The sugar production in India up to December 15, 2023, for the current season 2023-24 has reached 74.05 lakh tonnes, marking a decrease from the 82.95 lakh tonnes produced on the corresponding date in the previous season. The number of operating factories stands at 497 this year, mirroring the figure from the same date last year.
