Shortage of skilled labours affect jaggery production

Idukki, Kerala: The lack of skilled labours, especially from Tamilnadu has affected the sugarcane harvesting in Marayur since April this year. The region is also famous for jaggery production with GI tag. The coronavirus pandemic has restricted the movement of labours from one place to others which have also affected the jaggery production. Marayur and Kanthallur villages grow sugarcane over 600 hectares for jaggery production.

Selvin Mariyappam, a farmer and chief of the Marayur Hill Agriculture Development Society said, “Since lockdown, the labours have stopped coming to our villages that has affected the jaggery production in the region.”
