Shreeram Sugar Mill stops cane crushing due to raw materials shortage

Shreeram Sugar Mill commenced operations on February 12 following pressure from Nepal government but after two weeks due to raw material scarcity mill shut down its operations. The mill had crushed 3800-tonne Sugarcane in this span.

The mill had discontinued operations as it owes Rs 250 million to sugarcane farmers. According to the Kathmandu Post, Shyamananda Yadav, senior office assistant at the mill, said, “The mill had been operating partially and we planned to start operation at the beginning of the season but could not do so. With the delayed operation, the mill would not be able to produce sugar, and this would lead to huge losses this season.”

“The operations at mill began late but by that time farmers had sold Sugarcane to other mills,” he further added.

Shreeram purchases sugar from farmers in Bara, Parsa and Rautahat.
Farmers had agitated against the mill in December last for their pending arrears.
