2023-24 season: 263 sugar mills start crushing operations in India

New Delhi:  According to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF). as of November 15, 2023, 263 sugar mills started sugarcane crushing operations, and 162 lakh tonnes of sugarcane has been crushed. In the same period last year, 317 mills had begun crushing, and 246 lakh tonnes of sugarcane was crushed.

Sugar production in the new season is currently at 12.75 lakh tonnes, compared to 20 lakh tonnes in the same period last year. The average sugar recovery rate is also down by 0.35 per cent

Sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh began crushing for the first time in October this year. Sugar seasons in Karnataka and Maharashtra began after November 1.

Currently, there is a ongoing protest in western Maharashtra over the increase in sugarcane prices. Many mills have not started operating at full capacity.
