South Africa: Sugar industry happy with minister’s decision of not to increase tax

Those who depend on the sugar industry are happy as Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s announced there will be no hike in the sugar tax.

Rex Talmang, chairman of the SA Cane Growers’ Association said, “The sugar tax which is also known as health promotion Levy costs industry R1.5 billion and also 9000 jobs already lost their jobs. The Hike in tax would mean more loss of jobs. We are happy that the government did not heed to the pressure of sugar lobby but the existing tax is also at a high level.

In order to decrease sugar consumption, the government implemented 11 per cent levy on Sugar-sweetened beverages in 2018.
