Sri Lanka: Sugar importers urge Minister to release required amount of dollars to banks to import sugar

Colombo: Sugar importers have urged the state minister for consumer protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna to release an adequate amount of dollars to the banks to import sugar.

According to the media report, Nihal Seneviratne, the vice president of the Sugar importers association said that this will help to regularize the sugar import and control the sugar prices.

He said, “We have also discussed the matter with the minister and the sugar importers association on October 27.”

Though the government has fixed the sugar rates for domestic market the sugar is sold at a higher rate in the stores.

The Consumer Affairs Authority has fixed the rate of white sugar at Rs 122 per kg and brown sugar at Rs 125 per kg.
