Sri Lanka to raise import tax on ethanol

Colombo, Sri Lanka: Government has decided to increase the import tax on ethanol, said State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.

Ethanol is used for the production of disinfectant liquid and the import tax on it was lowered during the Covid epidemic.

The government is expected to earn an income of Rs 1.6 billion from tax, said the minister.

During the Covid epidemic, the production of sanitisers and other disinfectants were increased and the government slashed the import duty on ethanol twice in 2020.
