Sri Lanka to remove control prices on sugar

Colombo: The Sri Lanka government has stated that it will remove the control price imposed on sugar. The decision was taken after a meeting convened by Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa with the sugar importers on November 2.

Minister Basil Rajapaksha has asked the sugar importers to ensure that they provide sugar to consumers ensuring that there will not be any shortage of the commodity in the market.

A gazette notification regarding the removal of sugar control prices will be issued on November 3, said a senior official of the Consumer Affairs Authority.

The government in September had issued a gazette notification stating that the maximum wholesale price of white sugar to be Rs 116 per kg and maximum retail price of white sugar to be Rs 122 per kg.
