Bacolod: Sugarcane producers from three planters federations in Western Visayas associated with the Sugar Council, have urged the sugar regulatory authority to consider starting of milling season in August instead of September, reports Sun Star.
“The crops are ready to be harvested in August. The government had urged us to plant crops earlier last year and we did so as a result the crops are ready for harvesting. As many as 400,000 tonnes of crops are ready for harvesting and delay by one month would affect their quality,” said the Sugar Council.
Responding to the government’s call five Negros mills started milling in August due to a sugar shortage in the country and now it’s the turn of the government to respond to their demand of starting milling earlier, it stated.
Sugar Council has written a letter to the acting administrator of SRA, Pablo Luis S Azcona urging him to continue with the previous practice of milling from August.
