Sugarcane farmers warn of launching protest if Palwal Co-operative sugar mill fails to start operations by November 8

Palwal: Farmers affiliated with the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) have issued a stern warning, indicating their intention to initiate a protest if the cooperative sugar mill in Palwal fail to commence operations by November 8, reported Tribune India.

Concerns have arisen that the delay in starting the mill may result in financial setbacks for the sugarcane growers in the region.

Mahender Singh Chauhan, the spokesperson for SKM, highlighted that a similar issue plagued the previous season, with the mill commencing its operations during the first week of December due to mismanagement. He emphasized that, if the authorities do not initiate the mill’s operations by November 8, the farmer associations will be left with no choice but to launch a protest commencing on November 9.

The mill, inaugurated on December 2 the preceding year, encountered initial difficulties before finally starting operations on December 5. Farmers are questioning why the Palwal mill cannot emulate the prompt initiation of the sugar mill in Yamunanagar.

Ratan Singh Sorot, representing the BKU’s district unit, stressed the importance of the sugar mill starting operations in the first week of November each year, corresponding with the maturation of the crop for harvesting.

Shashi Vasundhara, the Managing Director of the sugar mill, stated, “The mill is expected to start operations by November 15. But, the recovery level needs to be at least nine, which was found to be low in the crop samples that were picked up recently.”
