Sugar harvest lowers by 7.2 per cent in Guatemala

Rio De Janeiro: Sugar harvest in Guatemala in the 2020-21 season has recorded 7.2 per cent less sugar output with the production of 2.56 million metric tonnes.

As per the news report published in riotimesonline.com, according to the Guatemalan Sugar Producers Association (Asazgua) data, the total harvest between 2020 and 2021 was 2.56 million tonnes. It is equivalent to 7.2 per cent less than the 2019-2020 sugar harvest in the country when production reached 2.76 million tonnes.

The sugar growers have stated that the covid-19 pandemic has affected the sugarcane cultivation in the country. Around 253,000 hectares of area is under sugarcane cultivation in Guatemala located in the southern coast of the Central American country.

Sugar mills are promoting a high yielding disease resistant CG02-163 cane variety to improve cane output. The variety is designed by scientists from the Guatemalan Sugarcane Research and Training Center (Cengicana).
