Sugar mills in Cuba start crushing season 2019-20

Cuba has started its 2019/20 cane crush focused on increasing production yields, according to China’s Xinhua newswire.

Siboney mill, in the eastern province of Camaguey, was the first one to start production this year. The mill plans to produce 20,000 metric tonnes of sugar in 157 days, according to the company’s manager Jorge Valdivia Velázquez.

The country’s government has urged the 44 Cuban sugarcane mills to work towards “an efficient season” to increase production in relation to the past season.

Mills produced 1.3 million tonnes of sugar last year, 13 per cent below estimates.

At its peak, when Cuba was one of the world’s largest sugar producers, the sugarcane industry in the country produced 7 million tonnes of sugar annually.
