Sugar mills may face shortage of cane cutters

Kolhapur: The Coronavirus has limited the movement of people from one place to others. Due to which industries are facing the difficulty of getting labourers.

Deputy director (sugar) N R Nikam had convened a meeting with the sugar mills representatives in Kolhapur on Friday to review the preparations. It was discussed that most mills in the state may face the challenge of the Corona epidemic as well as the shortage of sugarcane harvesting workers in the upcoming season.

Representatives of the sugar mills said it would be difficult for them to mobilise cane cutters within the framework of the rules that have been stipulated to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Mills have been asked to start cane crushing season from October this season but it would be difficult for them to get cane cutter because of corona pandemic.
