Sugarcane crushing season in India is in the final phase as sugar mills have started closing their cane crushing operations. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), Out of 516 sugar mills that were crushing cane during the ongoing season, 13 mills have closed their operations till February 15, 2022.
In Uttar Pradesh, 117 sugar mills are operating and three have closed their operations. The sugar mills have produced 59.32 lakh tonnes of sugar till February 15, 2022. During the same period, last year around 120 sugar mills had produced 65.13 lakh tonnes of sugar and 4 mills had closed crushing operations.
Sugar mills in Maharashtra are continuing cane crushing operations. 197 sugar mills were operating as on 15th February 2022 and had produced 86.15 lakh tonnes of sugar, compared with 75.46 lakh tonnes produced last year same period. Last year 185 mills had operated, out of which 2 mills had stopped their crushing on the corresponding date.
