Sugar output in UP remains lower this season

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has reported lower sugar production this season as compared to the previous one. The crushing season is in the last leg and many mills have also started closing their operations.

According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), a total of 112 sugar mills were operating till February 28, 2022, and 8 mills had closed their crushing operations. These sugar mills have produced 68.64 lakh tonne sugar till February 28, 2022. During last season, an equal number of sugar mills had produced 74.20 lakh tonne sugar during the same period and 11 mills were closed then.

ISMA has upgraded sugar output in Maharashtra to 126 lakh tonne (apart from diversion to ethanol production) as against earlier 117 lakh tonne for the ongoing crushing season. The sugar estimate from Karnataka has been increased to 55 lakh tonnes while the sugar output in UP is likely to remain the same. Total sugar output in the country is expected to be 333 lakh tonne for the ongoing season and the 34 lakh tonne sugar is likely to be diverted for ethanol production.
