Sugar prices rise in Pakistan

Lahore, Pakistan: The prices of sugar in Pakistan continue to rise as various grain markets reported the rate around Rs 90 per kg on Wednesday.

According to the media report, the wholesale grain markets of Lahore registered the maximum price of sugar at Rs 90 per kg, while the rates of Faisalabad grain markets were quoted as between Rs 89.4 to Rs 90 per kg. The sugar rates in Rahim Yar Khan were the lowest on Wednesday.

The Pakistan government on Tuesday allowed import of 3 lakh tonnes of sugar. The Economic Coordination Committee has given nod for the same. Pakistan is grappling with the shortage of sugar due to which the prices rose in the country. Earlier, the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) had urged the government to import 3,00,000 tonnes of sugar as strategic reserves for August to October.
