Sugar production in Maharashtra reaches more than 88 lakh tonnes

Only eight sugar mills in Maharashtra have stopped crushing operations so far in the current season, compared to 45 mills during same period in the pervious season, data from the Sugar Commissionerate showed.

Sugar recovery has also seen a marginal increase this season, at 10% as of February 26, 2024, compared to 9.91% last year.

Of the 207 sugar mills that participated in the crushing this season, including 103 cooperative and 104 private mills, 884.46 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed so far, and 884.49 lakh quintals (88.44 lakh tonnes) of sugar produced.

In comparison, 211 mills had crushed 953.06 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and produced 944.03 lakh quintals of sugar in the previous season.

The mills that have closed crushing operations this season include one each in Kolhapur, Solapur, Pune, Nanded, and Ahmednagar, and three mills in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar divisions.
