Sugar production in Mexico falls by 15 per cent due to drought

Mexico City: Sugar production in Mexico fell 15% this season as the crops have been affected due to drought in the region, said producers indicating official data, reports Reuters.

Mexico, one of the major sugar exporters to the United States, has produced 5.22 million tonnes of sugar in the 2022/23 season, less than the estimates of 5.43 million tonnes, as per the national sugar committee Conadesuca.

The data from the committee states that the sugar output in the preceding season was 6.164 million tonnes. Carlos Blackaller, head of the UNC, the largest sugarcane producers’ organisation in Mexico, said, “Drought is the main reason for lower output apart from poor fertilization.”

“We could return to normalcy with a good rainy season for the next harvest and can produce above 6 million tonnes,” he said.

Half of the 32 states in Mexico produce sugar and too much or too lower water affects the quality and quantity of sugar production.
