Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh crosses 120 lakh tonnes

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has surpassed Maharashtra in sugar production this season. According to the UP sugarcane minister, Till May 12, 121 lakh tonnes of sugar has been produced in the state, which is about 45 per cent of the total sugar production of the country. Whereas, Maharashtra has produced around 60 lakh tonnes of sugar. Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh is almost double of Maharashtra.

In this season, floods and drought have hampered the sugar production in Maharashtra. In previous stated had produced around 107 lakh tonnes of sugar.

Sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh are still operating. In Uttar Pradesh, the cane availability has increased for crushing in the current season due to premature closure of most of the gur / khandsari units operating in the state.

Speaking about the country’s sugar production, then according to ISMA, sugar mills across the country have produced 258.01 lakh tonnes of sugar between 1st October 2019 and 30th April 2020. This is about 63.70 lakh tonnes less than 321.71 lakh tonnes produced at the same time last year. However, as compared to 90 sugar mills which were crushing sugarcane on 30th April 2019, 112 sugar mills are crushing sugarcane on 30th April 2020 this year.
