Sugarcane crushing season in India is at mid-way with most of the sugar mills in the country starting the cane crushing operations. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh have produced 10.39 lakh tonnes of sugar till November 30, 2021. Total 101 sugar mills are operating in the state so far. The sugar produced in the state during the same period last year was higher compared to the current season. During the same period last year, 111 sugar mills had produced 12.65 lakh tonnes of sugar in UP.

At the same time, sugar production in Maharashtra has increased this year compared with the same period during last year. In Maharashtra, 172 sugar mills have started crushing operations as on 30th November 2021, as compared to 158 sugar mills which operated on the corresponding date of last year. Till 30th Nov. 2021, sugar production in the State was 20.34 lakh tonnes, compared with 15.79 lakh tonnes produced in the State as on 30th November 2020. The higher production is because of earlier start of crushing operations in Maharashtra and higher availability of sugarcane in this season.
