Sugar season 2024-25: Bihar government increases sugarcane price

Patna: The Bihar government has announced a major relief for sugarcane farmers, raising the prices of all sugarcane varieties by Rs 10 per quintal for the sugar season 2024-25. The decision, made during a meeting chaired by Sugarcane Industry Minister Krishnanandan Paswan, will see farmers receiving Rs 365 per quintal for the best quality sugarcane. The common variety will now be priced at Rs 345 per quintal, while the lower variety will fetch Rs 310 per quintal.

Minister Paswan explained that the price hike is a response to the decline in sugarcane production and aims to support the farmers during challenging times. The decision came after consultations with the Sugarcane Industry Department and sugar mill owners.

This increase follows the previous price hike in January 2024, when the Bihar government raised sugarcane prices by Rs 20 per quintal.

In related news, yesterday, the Punjab government also announced a Rs 10 per quintal increase in the State Advised Price (SAP) for sugarcane, bringing the SAP for early-maturing sugarcane to Rs 401 per quintal. This makes Punjab’s sugarcane prices the highest in the country.
