Sugar smuggling affecting domestic sugar industry: Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association

As per reports from Bangladeshi media, local refineries have called for immediate action to curb the illegal entry of sugar to help safeguard the domestic sugar industry from challenges. They argue that if such illicit sugar trade continues to impact the local market, the domestic sugar industry will undoubtedly face severe crises.

Golam Rahman, Secretary of the Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association, recently wrote a letter to the Ministry of Commerce, urging for swift measures to prevent the unauthorized entry of Indian sugar.

As reported, the smuggling of sugar from bordering areas is taking place, involving regions such as Haluaghat, Dobaowara, Durgapur, Netrokona, Kalamakanda, Brahmanbaria, and Silhat.

A senior commerce official explained that the increasing demand for Indian sugar and the continuous rise in commodity prices in the local market are contributing factors to the surge in sugar smuggling.

It’s worth mentioning that, in previous month, Border Security Forces (BSF) Meghalaya seized 7 country boats packed with about 29,000 kilograms of sugar worth more than rupees 11 lakhs, meant for smuggling to Bangladesh.

According to a recent report published in Mint, the government has also initiated discussions with the Border Security Forces (BSF) to address the issue of sugar smuggling.

Currently, India has imposed restrictions on sugar exports.
