Kenyan sugar industry is on the verge of collapse as the illegal smuggling of sugar from Uganda is on the rise, reports local media.
Through the porous border of Kenya, thousands of tonnes of cheap illegal sugar is being smuggled from Uganda. The investigation by the local News channel reveals that the sugar is especially smuggled through Busia and Bungoma counties. The smugglers are earning billions of shillings through the illegal business which is affecting the local sugar industry. The farmers are selling sugarcane at throwaway prices as the sugar prices have been affected by the inflow of imported sugar at a cheap rate.
