Sugar stocks stuck at Port in Sri Lanka

Colombo: The sugar stocks worth Rs 1 billion is still stuck at the port for the last five months.

Around 300 containers comprising 7,000 metric tons of sugar is stuck at the port, said Nihal Seneviratne, Vice President of the Sugar Importers’ Association.

The delay in payment of the late fees is the reason behind not releasing the consignment of sugar. Around 12,000 tons of sugar packed in 400 containers was imported by five importers five months ago. However, due to the policy decision taken by the Government to restrict the import of sugar and the shortage of dollars, the release of this consignment of sugar had been delayed.

The sugar importers had agreed to handover the sugar to Sathosa outlet network, said government officials and following this 5,000 tons of sugar was released.
