Sugarcane farmers angry over non payment of compensation

Margao/Ponda: Government has fooled us by closing the Sanjivani Sugarcane factory and giving us false assurance of restarting it several times, said sugarcane farmers of Sanguem, reports The Times of India.

Prashant Desai, Sanguem Uss Utpadak Sangharsh Samiti member said, “Government had assured us to pay Rs 3,600 per tonne as compensation last year but the farmers have not yet received the amount and they are now protesting outside the sugarcane plant.”

The farmers are objecting to sending their cane to Karnataka and they have demanded to crush cane in the Sanjivani sugar mill.

The demand of farmers has not been accepted by the government and now we want the government to hand over the mill to farmers, said Desai.
