Sugarcane farmers ask government to clear sugar factory’s fate by September 25

Ponda, Goa: Sugarcane farmers in Goa are uncertain about Sanjivani sugar factory’s future. They want the factory to commence operations this season but are unaware of the government’s stand on it. Cane growers urged the government to take a decision on this. They have given an ultimatum to the government to clear their stand till September 25 or else sugarcane farmers will protest in front of the factory on September 29.

The factory located at Dharbandora is the only sugar factory in the state. It is reeling under financial stress due to maintenance and old machinery problems. The repair work of the factory usually starts after Ganesh Chaturthi but this year no work has begun so far. In last season, the mill failed to operate and the government had sent state’s cane to the sugar mill in Karnataka for crushing.
