Sugarcane farmers in Sangli and Satara demand FRP in single installment

Kolhapur: Sugarcane farmers in Sangli and Satara have demanded FRP (fair and remunerative price) payment, fixed by the central government, in a single installment from sugar mills.

The majority of mill owners in the Kolhapur district have announced to pay FRP in single installment and the farmers in these two districts want the millers to follow the same footsteps.

Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana activists have taken to the streets demanding mills to announce their decision in this regard immediately.

According to the news report published in The Times of India, most of the sugar mills have started cane crushing operations without announcing the details about payments. The angry farmers are now stopping sugar cane-laden vehicles tractors from reaching the mills by releasing the air from the tyres of the trolleys and tractors.

Mahesh Kharade, Sangli unit head of SSS said, “Sugar mills in Kolhapur district have announced that they will pay FRP in one go but we wonder that the Millers in Sangli and Satara districts have not yet announced about payments. We have appealed to the farmers to not let the mills cut the sugar cane if they do not give an assurance regarding the payment.”
