Sugarcane farmers in Sri Lanka want ethanol import ban to continue

Embilipitiya, Sri Lanka: The sugarcane farmers staged a demonstration at Embilipitia town demanding that the government should continue the ban on ethanol to protect the interests of the local industry and the cane farmers.

Since the government banned the import of ethanol from January this year, the farmers have stated that they are getting good returns for their produce and the domestic industry has boomed.

Former parliamentarian Janaka Wakkumbura who led the protest said, “The business lobby is trying to lift the ban on the import of ethanol and clear illegal shipments lying at the Colombo Port. The participants protested against these alleged efforts, and demanded the ban on ethanol imports not be lifted to protect the local industry.”
