Sugarcane farmers launch agitation over closure of sugar mill in Zaheerabad

Sangareddy: Sugarcane farmers demonstrated in front of the office of RDO in Zaheerabad on Wednesday demanding the revival of a sugar mill that has been closed for the last two years.

The farmers stated that the closure of the sugar mill has forced them to sell their cane to the sugar mills in neighbouring Nizamabad district and to Karnataka which is increasing their transportation costs. Last year they had produced around three to four lakh metric tonnes of sugarcane and this year the production is likely to reach 10 to 12 lakh tonnes which will increase the transportation issue, they said.

Farmers claim that the government has not taken any steps for the revival of the sugar mill this season also and urged the government to initiate talks with the industry officials and take steps to reopen the sugar mill.
