Sugarcane farmers seek government help

Kadapa: Sugarcane farmers in the district are facing severe problems as the sugar mill from the region has remained shut leaving them no alternative for crushing their produce. Some cane farmers are sending the cane to other areas.

As the sale has dipped, the farmers are shifting to other crops reducing the area under cane cultivation. Farmers are also facing financial problems as the sugar mills are not clearing their dues on time.

According to the news report published in Deccanchronicle.com, around 262 farmers have not received payments for the sugarcane yields of two years back. An industry in Nellore district’s Podalakuru owes Rs 3 crore to farmers in the district. Last year the cane farmers raised the issue with the Kadapa MP Avinash Reddy and Mydukuru MLA Raghuramireddy when they came to Chapadu on October 18 for the inauguration of new secretariat building. The MP immediately asked the assistant cane commissioner to look into the matter. The farmers have also raised the issue with Ambati Krishnareddy, chief adviser, state agriculture department but the issue continues to remain as it is.

Now, cane growers are seeking government intervention in this matter.
