Sugarcane farmers stage protest in Amritsar, demand pending cane dues

Amritsar: Intensifying their agitation for pending cane dues, sugarcane farmers under the banner of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) blocked the rail tracks on the Amritsar-Delhi rail route at Baba Bakala on Friday, reports Hindustan Times.

They were agitating as the Rana Sugar Mill at Butter Sivan village has not cleared their pending cane dues.

The agitation continued for four hours and was called off after the administration intervened and assured that the mill will clear the cane dues soon.

Sawinder Singh Chutala, senior vice-president of the KMSC said, “On Thursday we launched a dharna outside the office of SDM, Baba Bakala demanding pending cane dues but no one responded. Hence we laid siege to the railway track and we lifted the blockade after we got a assurance from the mill that the dues will be cleared soon.”
