Sugarcane farmers suspend strike after CM assures to address their issue

Ponda: Sugarcane cultivators from Dharbandora and neighbouring areas suspended their proposed strike on Thursday after Goa’s chief minister Pramod Sawant assured them to meet. The farmers were planning to protest outside the premises of the Sanjivani cooperative sugar mill over non-payment of the promised cane price.

Harshad Prabhudesai, Vice-chairman of the Goa Sugarcane Cultivators’ Association said that he received a letter on Wednesday from the Registrar of Cooperative Societies stating that the CM will be meeting the members of the association on Friday to discuss the issue.

Sugarcane farmers allege that the chief minister had failed to maintain his promise of paying them 70 per cent of the bills of their produce.
