Sugarcane farmers threaten to agitate for pending cane dues

Ambala: Sugarcane farmers have set a deadline of December 31 to the Naraingarh sugar mill to pay pending cane dues. The farmers have stated they would launch agitation if the mill fails to clear their pending dues.

The sugarcane crushing at the mill for the forthcoming season will begin from November 23. As per the Sugarcane control act, it is mandatory for mills to clear cane bills of farmers within 14 days of crushing their cane.

As per news report published in Tribuneindia.com, Vinod Rana, president, Ganna Kisan Sangharsh Samiti said, “The delay in the payment of cane dues has become regular and farmers have to launch agitation to get these dues from the mills.”

He said,“Delayed payment forced farmers to sell off their produce to sugarcane crushers at cheaper rates. Farmers are likely to sell their produce to the Yamunanagar mill and to other mills in Punjab,”.

“We have assured farmers that the pending dues will be cleared by December 31 and we will start releasing the cane bills for the current season from January 1,” said Niraj, Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) who is also the CEO of the mill.
