Sugarcane farmers to protest outside Sanjivani sugar mill over non-payment of dues

Ponda: Sugarcane farmers from Goa have decided to launch an agitation for their pending cane arrears. The farmers will agitate on Thursday morning outside the premises of the Sanjivani cooperative sugar mill. They alleged that the chief minister Pramod Sawant had failed to maintain his promise of paying them 70 per cent of the bills of their produce.

Cane growers claim that they have been receiving just 35 per cent of their dues. Motivating sugarcane farmers to cultivate sugarcane, Goa Chief minister Pramod Sawant had assured them that the Sanjivani sugar mill would purchase their and requested them to continue with cane cultivation. At present, Laila sugar mill at Khanapur in Karnataka for is doing crushing of their sugarcane.

The factory is facing financial trouble due to a lack of adequate supply of cane. The mill has registered a loss of Rs 101.22 crore due to unavailability of sugarcane and various reason. The government made sure that sugarcane produced by farmers will be bought at the market price. CM had assured farmers that those who produce sugarcane this season would not incur any loss.
