Sugarcane farmers worry as migrant labourers stuck in Bihar

Jalandhar: As the number of coronavirus positive cases is increasing in Bihar, the sugarcane cultivators from Jalandhar are worried as it may increase their difficulties in finding the labourers for work in sugarcane field. Sugarcane farmers here depend on the migrant labourers for crop sowing.

According to farmers, during the absence of the migrant workers, they managed to sow paddy with the help of the local labourers and direct seeding technique. But they were not useful in the case of sugarcane.

According to the news report published in The Tribune, Manjit Rai, President, Bharatiya Kisan Union (Doaba) said, “Farmers adopted every means to sow and then transplant the paddy. They took help from local labourers, too, but this will not be useful in the case of sugarcane. The whole process is dependent on migrant labourers.”

Farmers are in touch with the migrant labourers and they are willing to return but flood and increasing Covid-19 cases are making it difficult for them to come in Jalandhar.
