Sugarcane production in UP increases by 9 per cent

Bijnor: Sugarcane production in Uttar Pradesh reported a 9% increase in the 2022-23 crushing season, reports The Times of India.

Bijnor district remained at the top in the state producing 1,233 lakh quintals of sugarcane.

As many as 50 lakh sugarcane farmers are involved in growing sugarcane crops on over 27 lakh hectares of agricultural land and are affiliated with 119 sugar mills in the state. Total 1, 102, 49 lakh tons of sugarcane was harvested this season including 1,099, 49 lakh tons by sugar mills and 3.05 lakh tons of cane by small units.

V K Shukla, additional cane commissioner said, “The favourable climate and the education provided to farmers about good varieties of sugarcane and modern technology of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides has helped in increasing sugarcane output.”

Following Bijnor, Lakhimpur and Muzaffarnagar topped the list of highest cane production, he said.

OP Singh, the deputy cane commissioner of Saharanpur, said, “Educating farmers over different methods of farming, residue management and judicious use of water has helped them in increasing cane production.”
