Sugarcane recovery in Pune division crosses 10 per cent

Maharashtra’s 2023-24 sugar production season is ongoing, with some mills starting to close operations. In terms of recovery rate, Kolhapur district leads, followed by Pune which has surpassed 10 per cent.

According to the figures from the Sugar Commissioner’s Office, as of February 07, 2024, in the 2023-24 season, the Pune division has crushed 159.82 lakh tons of sugarcane, resulting in the production of 159.95 lakh quintals of sugar. The sugar recovery in the division has reached up to 10.01%.

Presently, four sugar mills in the state have ceased operations, compared to six mills that ceased crushing in the previous season. Notably, one sugar mill in the Solapur division, two in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Nagar division, and one in the Nanded division have concluded their crushing season.

In the ongoing season, a total of 207 sugar mills participated in crushing operations in Maharashtra. This comprises 103 cooperative and 104 private sugar mills, contributing to the crushing of 743.25 lakh tons of sugarcane. So far, the state has produced approximately 723.35 lakh quintals (72.33 lakh tons) of sugar. The average sugar recovery in the state currently stands at 9.73%.

In comparison, during the same period last season, 208 sugar mills were operational, crushing 820.55 lakh tons of sugarcane and producing 803.07 lakh quintals of sugar.
