Sugarcane workers get 14 per cent hike in payment

Pune: The sugarcane workers have called off their strike following the 14 per cent rise in the payment for the upcoming seasons. The decision was taken after mediation by Nationalist Congress Party chief and Vasantdada Sugar Institute Chairman Sharad Pawar.

The cane workers will get 14 per cent hike in their payment and the contractor will get 19 per cent commission instead of 18.5 per cent.

As per the new agreement, the workers carrying sugarcane on their head from fields to tractors 100 meter away will get Rs 273.14 per tonne as against existing Rs 239 per tonne. The rate for loading sugarcane in bullock cart from the field will be Rs 304.78 per tonne instead of Rs 267.34 per tonne. And for loading sugarcane in a makeshift tractor, workers will be paid Rs 237.46 per tonne against Rs 208. 30 per tonne. The agreement will be in effect for crushing seasons 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23.
