Sugarcane worth Shs300 million destroyed in fire

Iganga: Farmer lost sugarcane grown in his 70-acre land located at Bukoona village of Nakalama Sub-county in Iganga district as fire engulfed the crops.

The owner of the farm identified as Mr. Edrisa Kalonget Misiwa suspects that the fire from the neighbouring garden might have spread into his field. The fire destroyed about 3,500 tonnes of raw sugarcane amounting to Shs300 million.

“I have lost the entire crop and can’t send it to any sugar factory for crushing as all the factories have stopped accepting burnt sugarcane,” he said.

The fire began at around 1 pm on Sunday, said the villagers.

The incident has been registered with the Nakalama police station. Mr. Michael Arinda, the officer in-charge of the police station has recorded the statement of the farm owner and neighbours and further investigating the case.
