Tamil Nadu: AIADMK seeks CM intervention to resume sugar mill

Chennai: AIADMK leader O. Panneerselvam has urged Chief Minister M K Stalin to take steps to revive operations at the National Cooperative Sugar Mills in Madurai district.

As per the news report published in Thehindu.com, he has issued a statement stating that the AIADMK government had provided financial assistance worth Rs 39.32 crore to the mill during the last two years when the cane was not available for crushing due to the poor rainy season. This year the state has witnessed good rainfall and 60,000 tonnes of sugarcane were registered and there are 17,000 tonnes of unregistered sugarcane.

It was put forward on behalf of the mills management that the unit is in need of about Rs 22 crore for crushing operations to commence.

“Once the mill starts operations, this will benefit 10,000 cane farmers and 500 workers associated with the mill, apart from the number of persons indirectly connected with the mill,” he further added.
