Tamil Nadu: Rain boosts sugarcane cultivation in Dharmapuri

Dharmapuri: The abundant rainfall during the South West monsoon would boost sugarcane cultivation in Dharmapuri, reports The New Indian Express.

So far the Dharmapuri region has received 585 mm of rain which is above average rainfall received by the region.

The water scarcity has forced the farmers in the district to give up cane cultivation in the past decade. The favourable rainfall this season has encouraged the farmers to take up cane cultivation, said the officials in Agriculture department.

Farmers have stated that they were shifting to other crops including vegetables due to scarcity of water in the district and with good rain now they are shifting to cane cultivation.
