Tiruvarur: District Collector P. Gayathri Krishnan has stated that the administration has procured sugarcane required as a part of the Pongal gift hampers from the local farmers, reports The Hindu.
The gift hampers would be distributed to the 3,86,292 families in the district through the Fair Price Shops (FPS) and the cardholders should visit these shops to claim the gifts, the officer said.
Sugarcane will be included in the hamper kit along with cashews and cardamom. The district administration has procured all the necessary items to be distributed to the residents, the officer added.
The sugarcane farmers were earlier demanding the government to fix the price of sugarcane per piece to be procured for Pongal as the festival is approaching. The government has fixed Rs 33 per piece for sugarcane crops that will be distributed as part of the hamper.
