Tanzania imports 25,000 tonnes of sugar

To overcome the domestic shortage of sugar in the country, Tanzania has imported 25,000 tonnes of sugar. Japhet Hasunga, the Minister for Agriculture, informed the parliament while tabling the budget proposal for the financial year 2020-21 that around 4,000 tonnes of sugar has arrived at Dar es Salaam. Speaking at the House in the capital Dodoma, he said that by the end of this month, the remaining sugar will arrive in the country.

He said that we were expecting early delivery of the commodity, but the Covid-19 has impacted the imports. The shortage of sugar last month led to hoarding of the commodity by traders that resulted in a hike in prices and the government fixed indicative price for sugar on April 24. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa ordered government officials to conduct surprise checks at warehouses to nab the sugar hoarders.
