Tanzania issues permit to import sugar

Morogoro: The government was issuing permits to companies to import sugar, stated Prof. Adolf Mkenda, the minister for Agriculture. He urged the companies to start importing sugar for next year.

This indicates the change in the government policy that is allowing traders to import sugar to compensate for the shortage.

The recent figures reveal that the sugar production capacity of the five sugar factories of the state in 2019 was 378,000 tonnes and the domestic demand for sugar was 470,000 metric tonnes.

Prof Mkenda said, “Sugar is starting to look like drugs dealing or mafia. We want it to be imported by these companies but for the last time this year. The sugar board will start importing sugar.”
